General Information

Visa:
Please note that the nationals of the following countries will be issued free entry permits upon arrival in the UAE, all other nationalities will require visas prior to arrival: United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Malta, Spain, Monaco, Vatican City, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino and Liechtenstein, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and South Korea.

Currency
The local currency in the UAE is the Arab Emirates Dirham (Dhs). The Dirham is linked to the US$ at the rate of Dhs3.67 = US$1.

Local laws
Although you are allowed to drink in many of Dubai's numerous bars, remember this is a Muslim country. If you wander around the streets drunk then there is a good chance you will be arrested. There is also zero tolerance towards drinking and driving. That means the legal limit is zero and being caught will usually end in a prison sentence. Certain prescription drugs which are legal elsewhere in the world are banned in Dubai. If you need to take these then you must ensure that you take a doctors prescription with you. A list of which drugs are illegal can be found at the: US consulate to Dubai's website.

Language
The official language of the UAE is Arabic. Other languages spoken are English, Hindi, and Farsi. A large number of the expatriate population are from the sub-continent, the Philippines, Iran, and just about any country. So you will find people here speaking Urdu, Tagalog, Malayalam, Russian, South African and languages.

Clothing
You will only need summer clothes when you're here, however it is a good idea to bring a few light sweaters or cardigans as the air conditioning in some restaurants and malls can be chilly. While there is no official ruling about exactly what you can and can't wear, Westerners will be expected to dress with more modesty than you would at home in similar temperatures.
This doesn't mean that women have to cover up or wear a veil but they should try to wear clothes that are not too revealing, while men should avoid short shorts and bare chests. Dubai is a liberal emirate, but it is also part of an Islamic country. You should also be respectful of Gulf culture.

Transport
The car is king in this city, and with wide, fast roads crossing the emirate, it’s the easiest way to get around.  A car can be hired from any of numerous car-rental companies operating in the city and with such a competitive market, rates are pretty reasonable. A renter needs to provide original passport, 2 photographs, and a valid international driving license or national license. Compared to Europe and the United States, taxis are very cheap in Dubai. Taxis are also plentiful and you won't usually have to wait more than a few minuets before one comes along. An average 10km journey will set you back around Dh15 (around $3.50) All taxis are metered. The bus service in Dubai is limited but popular. It tends to run mostly in Deira and Bur Dubai although there are services running along the Shaikh Zayed Road. If catching the bus, male tourists should be wary of sitting next to women they don't know as this is frowned upon in Muslim culture.

Religion
The official religion of the United Arab Emirates is Islam. But other faiths are accepted and freedom of worship privately is given. Churches are common in some emirates and in Dubai you will even find a Hindu Temple.

Climate
Moderate climate is found between October and March when days are sunny and pleasant (Average Temperature - 26C). Nights are Cool (average temperature is 15C) Summer is between April and September, when temperatures peak at 50C with high humidity levels. In the summer, southerly and northerly winds blow over the UAE with occasional sandstorms.

Electricity
Dubai is a modern city and has adopted the same electrical power systems as the UK. Whereas most power outlets in hotel rooms will be the UK 3 pin plug type, and operate at 240 volts.

Telephone
Like the power systems, Dubai has opted for the UK type telephone jack system, but it is possible to find converters from UK type to the US RJ12 type.

Overview

South Africa is fondly known as the Rainbow Country because of its diversity of people, cultures and natural scenery. The South African nation comprises people of San (or Bushman), Nguni, Sotho-Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Indian, Afrikaner and mixed origin, as well as immigrant communities from all corners of the world. Officially the population consists of more than 40 million people

It is a country where a bright future awaits anyone who is skilled and committed to hard work. For older people it is also an ideal place to retire. The favorable exchange rate, good weather and excellent medical facilities will ensure their care-free future.

Owing to the disparate cultural backgrounds of the various peoples of the country, there is no uniform or coherent South African culture as such. South African artists of all population groups are active locally as well as overseas in all fields. The differences in cultural background between black and white are most marked in the artistic expressions of the various groups. The styles and traditions of whites are generally European in origin and those of the blacks, African. In music, literature, architecture, drama, fine and graphic arts many South Africans achieve success with the symbioses of European and African elements.

More than 75% of the South African population belongs to Christian churches. Other major religious groups are the Hindus, Muslims and Jews.

Major South African centres are linked by reliable air, rail and road transport services. Public transport services within towns and cities are irregular though. Taxis are extremely expensive and most South Africans therefore have to depend on their own means of transport.

South Africans drive on the left-hand side of the road. Generally the speed limits range from 60km/h in residential areas to a maximum of 120km/h on national highways. Pay attention to the signs in this regard.

Rental vehicles are available in all major South African Centres.

Why Tanzania

Why Tanzania

‘The Land of Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar”

Tanzania, East Africa’s largest country offers a unique unspoilt safari. For exciting game drives head off to the vast Serengeti plains, the Tanzanian section of the Masai Mara which has the largest concentration of wildlife in the world. Tanzania is also home to Mount Kilimanjaro-‘ the roof of Africa’. If you are not quite in the mood for adventure in the numerous game parks or mountains, you could relax in the pristine beaches of the Spice Islands of Zanzibar

Tropical Coastline

Tanzania has an 804-kilometre long coastline comprising the finest beaches in Africa. The entire coastline is covered by coconut palms, offering a serene atmosphere for repose. The coastline is perfect for bathing and water sports.

Offshore Islands

The spice island of Zanzibar and Pemba are havens for tourists. Tourist attractions ranging from its historic buildings with unique architecture, narrow and winding streets and, rich culture and traditions.
Slightly off the coast south of Dar es Salaam lies Mafia Island, a diver’s delight. The Island is one of the most popular deep sea fishing locations in the world, offering opportunities for scuba diving,  norkelling, and big game fishing

Historic Ruins

Tanzania is full of historical relics. These include the ruins of Zanzibar, Bagamoyo, Kilwa, and the Stone Age remains of Ismani, and the Olduvai Gorge (pupolarly known as the “cradle of mankind”) which lies between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The Amboni caves and rock paintings of Kondoa Irangi in Central Tanzania are other destinations for the curious and adventurous tourist.
It was here in 1959, where the famous Dr. Louis Leakey unearthed fossils of the early man.

Wildlife

Watch the big five in the various game reserves scattered across Tanzania. The Serengeti ecosystem which supports the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in the world is a must see. Other parks and reserves such as the Lake Manyara National Park-famed for its tree climbing lions, Ruaha National Park among others boost great flora

Mountains

The Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain. It is the only peak of its size that can be climbed with relative ease by non-mountaineers, and many take the opportunity to do so. Other mountains are Mount Meru located in Arush National Park.

Getting around
Border Points
Just below the equator, Tanzania borders Kenya and Uganda in the north; Zaire, Rwanda and Burundi in the west; and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique in the south. Namanga Gate (between Tanzania and Kenya) is open 24 hours per day.

If you carry firearms you will require a special permit. The duty-free allowance is limited to one litre of liquor; 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco; and 250ml of perfume. Any other items are subject to customs duty.

Rail Travel

Tanzania has two rail lines: The Tazara line runs from Dar es Salaam to Zambia's New Kapiri Mposhi, via Mbeya and Tunduma. The central line runs from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma and Mwanza, via Morogoro, Dodoma and Tabora.

Rail is a safer but slower travel option, and food can be purchased on board. Crime is not a major problem, but do ensure you have your possessions with you at all times.

Bus Travel

'Express' and 'ordinary' buses operate along Tanzania's major long-distance routes.

Express buses are more comfortable, make fewer stops, and operate to a schedule, though they are slightly more expensive.

Ordinary buses (generally the only option on secondary routes) are often packed to overflowing, make many stops, and deviate quite freely from the schedule. They and dalla-dallas (minivans) serve shorter routes. The latter are a slower and more dangerous option.

Buses are not permitted to operate at night. Note that Tanzanian roads have a high accident rates, and buses tend to speed. Reservations are not always possible, so get to the bus with plenty of time before the scheduled departure.

Airports

Domestic air services operate between the major airports:
»     Dar es Salaam International (DAR)
»     Kilimanjaro International (JRO)
»     Kishni, Zanzibar (ZNZ)
There are a total of 129 airports in Tanzania, of which only eleven are paved. Air services have become the most significant form of internal transport for official and business travel. Small planes, from charter companies, fly to towns and to bush airstrips.

Roads

There are 88,200 km of highways in Tanzania, but only 3,704 km of these are tarred. The key roads are in good condition, though the majority are bad and hazardous.

Road conditions in the reserves and national parks of Tanzania are extremely rough. During the rainy season, many roads are passable only with four-wheel drive vehicles. Tanzania is definitely not recommended as a self-drive destination. Any four-wheel drive vehicles for safaris usually have to be hired with a driver.

Watch out for cyclists, pedestrians, livestock and wild animals. Most car rental companies do not allow self-drive outside of Dar es Salaam. Driving is on the left side of the road. Your home driving licence, with English translation if necessary, is accepted.

Passports and Visas

Entry requirements

(as at Dec 2004)
Important Note: This is a guide only - please check with your nearest Tanzanian Consulate for up to date information.

Almost all nationalities of visitor require visas, with the exception of certain countries of the Commonwealth. You should acquire a visa before travelling, because some airlines insist on them prior to departure. Depending on nationality and country of origin, a visa may be obtained on arrival at Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports and at Namanga Gate on the Tanzania/Kenya border.

Despite being part of the union of Tanzania, Zanzibar remains independent. Passports and a Tanzanian visa are required for even a single day's visit. Requirements may change so you are advised to contact your nearest Tanzanian Consulate before finalising your travel arrangements.

Visas cost US$10-60 depending on nationality and are usually valid for three months. Requirements for obtaining a visa are: a passport valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay, two passport photographs, proof of sufficient funds, two application forms and a detailed itinerary stating the reason for your visit. Sometimes a photocopy of your airline tickets is required.

 General Accommodation Info

Most safari lodges vary in size and style, and are built to blend in with the environment. Accommodation tends to be of rondawel or banda type, with a lounge, central dining area and bar in single unit hotels.

Do not be misled by the term "tented accommodation" - this usually refers to luxurious insect-proof tents that are permanently pitched on concrete bases, often including en suite bathrooms with flush toilets. They are very popular and give the visitor the true experience of being close to nature without the inconvenience and discomfort that can be associated with camping in the open.

All major towns in Tanzania have excellent luxury hotels, and all towns will at least have a good guest house. Note that the word hotel (or in Swahili, hoteli) means food and drink only, rather than lodging. It would be better to use the word guesthouse (or in Swahili, guesti). Hotels often have their own restaurants. The main meal is at midday and many restaurants are closed in the evening. Local food is readily available. In the east, facing the rich Indian ocean, you will encounter wonderful seafood as well as great tasting fruit.

National parks offer "ordinary" campsites which provide toilets, fireplaces and usually water taps. "Special" campsites usually only have a pit toilet. It is necessary to pre-book special campsites, and advisable to book ordinary ones. Camping is limited outside the national parks.

Due to the distances travelled in Tanzania it is strongly recommended that you make all your arrangements in advance. During the migration and peak season, availability is at a premium.
